Borrowed this from Julie. I’ve heard about it here and there but never really cared much to pick it up. It was a diversionary reading while I was at Julie’s a few times and then I decided to take it back with me to finish. It served its purpose, I suppose.

It stayed interesting by the interjections of transcripts from the mental hospital Kaysen was in and her anecdotes about the mechanics of hospital life. The storyline was sorta all over the place, not necessarily difficult to follow, but you often wondered why you were bothering. It was sometimes interesting to hear about the other girls, but more often than not you were just wondering what exactly the point was that she was trying to make. Her own explanations about her past and behavior came across, at least to me, as almost snooty. That’s sort of a hard point of view to develop, but something I picked up on immediately that kind of needled at me the entire time I was reading the book.

The viewpoint is unique and interesting, and the book isn’t bad. I guess it’s a matter of taste. It mostly, however, just seems to be moving along quickly to nowhere inparticular.

  1. I liked this book, but the movie bored me so much I fell asleep within ten minutes.

  2. I have to say that I enjoyed both the book and the movie. I think Angelina Jolie gave a great performance.
